Back pain can make the simplest things difficult. Getting out of bed. Sitting at your desk. Driving. Picking up your children. Even putting your socks on can become a job.

You don’t have to work out what’s wrong on your own.

At Maidenhead Chiropractic Clinic, we’ll take the time to listen, assess how you’re moving and explain what may be contributing to your pain. You’ll leave with clear answers and a plan built around you.

Evening and weekend appointments are available.

Let’s find out what’s causing your back pain

Back pain doesn’t always start with a dramatic injury.

Sometimes there’s an obvious trigger, such as lifting something heavy, twisting awkwardly, gardening or increasing your training. Other times, it builds gradually or appears without a clear reason.

You may notice:

  • an ache or stiffness in your lower back
  • pain when sitting, standing or bending
  • difficulty getting comfortable in bed
  • pain after driving or working at a desk
  • discomfort when lifting or exercising
  • pain that keeps returning

Whatever your back pain feels like, the first step is understanding it properly.

A personal approach to back pain care

I’m Francesca, one of the chiropractors at Maidenhead Chiropractic Clinic.

When someone comes to see me with back pain, I don’t begin with treatment. I begin by listening.

I’ll ask how the pain started, what makes it better or worse and how it’s affecting your day. We’ll then look at how your back and the surrounding joints and muscles are moving.

Once I understand what’s happening, I’ll talk you through it in plain English. No confusing terminology. No rushing you into a decision.

Where chiropractic care is suitable, your plan may include gentle hands-on treatment, movement advice and simple exercises to do at home. NICE recommends that manual therapy for lower back pain is used as part of a wider treatment package that includes exercise.

The aim is to help relieve your symptoms, get you moving more comfortably and give you practical ways to look after your back between appointments. If your pain travels down into your leg, read about our sciatica treatment in Maidenhead.

Worried that chiropractic treatment will hurt?

Please tell us.

Some people feel nervous about chiropractic care, particularly if they’ve seen videos of forceful adjustments or loud clicking sounds.

We have a broad range of techniques available, including gentle, low-force approaches. Your care will be adapted to your body, your needs and what you feel comfortable with.

Nothing should come as a surprise. We’ll explain what we’re doing and why before treatment begins.

What happens at your first appointment?

Your first appointment gives us time to understand what’s been happening and decide whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

We listen

We’ll talk about your pain, your health, your daily routine and what you’d like to get back to doing.

We assess

Your chiropractor will carry out a thorough physical examination. This may include looking at your movement, joints, muscles, posture and any areas of tenderness.

We explain

We’ll tell you what we’ve found in clear language and answer your questions. If we think another healthcare professional is better placed to help, we’ll tell you.

We agree on a plan

Where appropriate, treatment may begin during your first visit. You’ll also receive a clear plan, so you know what we recommend and what happens next.

Not sure whether to book a full consultation?

Start with a £20 Spinal Screen.

It’s a relaxed, no-obligation appointment where you can talk to us about what’s been happening and ask whether chiropractic care may be suitable.

If you decide to book a full consultation afterwards, the £20 will be put towards it.

When back pain needs urgent medical attention

Most episodes of back pain are not caused by a serious medical problem. However, some symptoms need urgent assessment.

Please seek urgent medical help rather than booking a routine chiropractic appointment if your back pain comes with:

  • a sudden change in bladder or bowel control
  • numbness around your bottom or genital area
  • new or worsening weakness in your legs
  • difficulty walking
  • pain shooting down both legs
  • a recent significant accident or injury
  • fever or chills

These symptoms do not always mean there is a serious problem, but they should be assessed promptly.

Meet Francesca

Francesca is a registered chiropractor who graduated from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic.

Her interest has never been limited to one type of patient or one type of problem. She enjoys the variety of chiropractic practice and working with people of different ages, backgrounds and lifestyles.

During her training, Francesca particularly enjoyed her paediatric placement. She found it incredibly rewarding to support children and their families with their health and wellbeing.

Today, she works with people of all ages and draws on a broad toolbox of techniques to adapt care to each person.

Outside the clinic, Francesca has a deep love of sport. She has competed nationally in taekwondo and still enjoys going to the gym. When she isn’t training, there’s a good chance she’ll be baking something delicious.

“My favourite part of the job is getting to know the person behind the pain. Everyone is different, so their care should be too.”

Frequently asked questions

Chiropractic care may help with certain types of back pain. Your chiropractor will assess you first to understand your symptoms and make sure chiropractic care is appropriate. Where suitable, care may include hands-on treatment, advice and exercises to help relieve discomfort and improve movement.

Treatment should always be adapted to you. We use a range of techniques, including gentle, low-force options. You may experience some temporary soreness after treatment, much like you might after exercise. Please tell your chiropractor if you’re worried or uncomfortable at any point.

There isn’t one answer that applies to everyone. It will depend on what’s causing your symptoms, how long you’ve had them, your general health and what you want to achieve. Your chiropractor will explain their recommendations after assessing you. You’ll know what the plan is before deciding whether to continue.

Where it is clinically appropriate, treatment may begin at your first appointment. Sometimes we may need more information before starting. Your chiropractor will explain this clearly if it applies to you.
